Traditional Chinese medicine thinks that overweight can be caused by either exterior blockage or interior fire.     I think that blood stasis due to stress makes sense for that cortisol type of weight gain, but there is a more commonly encountered mechanism that Chinese medicine calls “phlegm-damp accumulation”.

    Essentially, it works like this. When the Spleen qi is deficient (inefficient digestion) or Spleen yang is deficient (slow metabolism), it results in the pooling of fluids in the digestive tract. These fluids (dampness) aren’t always liquid (edema), but sometimes more like humidity (high cholesterol). Still, in time, that dampness can congeal into phlegm which can be expressed from the lungs, line the stools (looks like mucus), cause blood stagnation (atherosclerosis) or show up as adipose tissue (fat) elsewhere in the body.

    So, some natural Chinese medicine approaches to weight loss are closer to the metabolism simulators we find in Western thinking. This can look like Spleen qi and yang tonics in Chinese medicine. Other weight loss treatment principles include inducing diuresis (making one pee more), but this is only the correct approach when the weight is due to too much fluids.
