Western medicine abuse is an important reason for the rise of Huo Shen Pai in contemporary Chinese medicine.

As we know that diseases treatment with Chinese medicine is to correct the imbalance between Yin and Yang in the human body.

Just as what Zhang Jingyue said in the Ming Dynasty:

“No matter the diseases are in the exterior, or in the interior, or induced by cold, or by heat, or by Wu Yun Liu Qi (Five Evolutive Phases and Six Climatic Factors), or by injury of organs and meridian, which shall not be beyond the scope of Yin and Yang. The disease must originate from one of them, either Yin or Yang. The clinical manifestation may vary from disease to disease, but the root is one. “

Nowadays, due to the abuse of western medicine, there are a lot of man-made patients of “Yin Sheng Yang Shuai” (Yin excess induce Yang deficiency), which plays a very important role for the rise of Huo Shen Pai in China in recent years.

  1. The abuse of infusion

The opening intravenous access establishes a lifeline for patients to maintain the normal functions of important organs. It is essential for the successful treatment of acute critically ill patients to keep them alive with intravenous dripping of fluid. However, the infusion is being abused in almost every disease now. The evidence is that the most crowded place in the hospital is always the Infusion Hall.

Over time, it leads to the stagnation of cold and dampness and the damage of Yang Qi, which finally results in the pattern of “Yin Sheng Yang Shuai” (Yin excess induces Yang deficiency). The symptoms include pale complexion, palpitation, chest tightness, edema and oliguria. The most commonly used formulas clinically are Zhen Wu Tang and Jing Gui Shen Qi Wan.

  2. The abuse of antibiotics

Western medicine thinks that the invasion of pathogenic microbes is the important reason to the occurrence of diseases. Almost all of the diseases can be attributed to primary or secondary bacterial infection. With the continuous occurrence of drug-resistant strains and bacteria variant, and the extended time of the use of antibiotics, the patients tend to have the symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, nausea, anorexia, abdominal distension and diarrhea.

Chinese medicine practitioners believe that western medicine like antibiotics is akin to the Chinese herbs clearing heat-toxicity, which taste bitter and are cold natured. Long-term repeated use of this kind of Chinese herbs can injury the spleen and kidney Yang, which usually can be treated by the formulas of Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang, Si Shen Tang and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang etc.

  3. The abuse of hormones

Hormone is one of the important drugs in Western medicine treatment of disease. Using them properly can enhance the patient’s emergency response functions, control disease and improve symptoms. Abusers tend to rely on hormones to control symptoms, or not to reduce the hormone dosage according to conditions.

Long-term excessive use of hormones can consume the Zhen Yang (Real Yang) and stir up Xiang Huo (ministerial fire). Clinically the abuse of hormones can result in the Dai Yang Zheng (syndrome of floating Yang) caused by “Yin Sheng Yang Shuai” (Yin excess induces Yang deficiency). The symptoms include red cheeks, red face, irritability and hyperhidrosis. The most commonly used formulas clinically are Shen Fu Long Mu Tang and Si Ni Tang etc.
